NFL Draft Grades (AFC)
AFC East
Buffalo Bills: B
I thought the AFC champs of 2020 drafted pretty well overall. I thought they could of went running back with one of the first 2 picks in the draft, but they went defense instead. Selecting Javonte Williams with the #30 overall pick is the route I would of went to solidify that offensive group.
Best pick: #61 DE Carlos Basham Jr Wake Forest
Player to watch: DE Gregory Rousseau Miami
Miami Dolphins: B+
The Miami Dolphins entered the draft wanting to get offensive help anyway they could. With Tua entering year 2 that was the focus. Running back position is still a concern. But they came away with former teammate of Tua's Jaylen Waddle and possibly the best pass rusher in the draft Jaelan Phillips
Best pick: Jaylen Waddle Alabama
Player to Watch: S Jevon Holland Oregon
New York Jets: B+
After trading Sam Darnold in the offseason. We knew all eyes were on BYU quarterback Zach Wilson. We will find out if he can turn this franchise around. With their first 4 picks they went offense (QB, G, WR, RB). Thats more help than Darnold ever got. Their next 5 picks was all secondary help. Maybe because they called a zero blitz on a Hail Mary pass last year that cost them the game. Oops!!
Best Pick: QB Zach Wilson BYU
Player to Watch: WR Elijah Moore Ole Miss
New England Patriots: B-
No, I'm not hating on the Patriots. Well I guess I am a little. Mac Jones fell to them at 15 in the 1st rd. I still can't seem him being a NFL caliber quarterback. But Belichick seems to think he can be the next Tom Brady. We'll see about that.
Best Pick: DT Christian Barmore Alabama
Player to Watch: DE Ronnie Perkins Oklahoma
AFC North
Baltimore Ravens: B+
Boy did I like their draft. Getting Lamar Jackson a #1 receiver with the 27th pick in the draft is a blessing. Rashod Bateman was a steal at that spot. They didn't reach for anybody and filled the needs on both defense and offense, specifically the in the pass rush and at the wide receiver positions.
Best Pick: WR Rashod Bateman Minnesota
Player to Watch: OLB Odafe Oweh Penn State
Pittsburgh Steelers: C
I didn't really like their draft at all. They went running back and tight end with their first 2 picks of the draft. The offensive line is still a major concern heading into the season. They reached pretty heavily with all their mid round picks. Quincy Roche, outside linebacker from Miami, whom they drafted in the 6th round could be a sleeper pick to replace the loss of Bud Dupree this offseason though.
Best Pick: RB Najee Harris Alabama
Player to Watch: Quincy Roche OLB Miami
Cleveland Browns: B+
Are we talking playoffs two years in a row for the Browns? Quite possibly. I thought they got a couple steals with their first 2 picks of the draft on the defensive side of the ball and I really like the underrated wide receiver out of Auburn, Anthony Schwartz in the 3rd round. Browns aren't backing down in the AFC North.
Best Pick: CB Greg Newsome II Northwestern
Player to Watch: ILB Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah
Cincinnati Bengals: B
The Bengals came into the draft needing desperate help along both the offensive and defensive line. Penei Sewell was available at #5, but they opted to pair up Ja'Maar Chase and Joe Burrow again like they were at LSU. I can't complain. I think Chase is a can't miss prospect and I can't wait to see him and Burrow back in action. The next 5 picks the Bengals solidified both lines.
Best Pick: WR Ja'Maar Chase LSU
Player to Watch: DE Joseph Ossai Texas
AFC South
Indianapolis Colts: C
Major risks surrounding the Colts picks. It's a mixed bag. They needed help along the defensive front to go along with Buckner and some secondary help and I don't know if they addressed it with the right picks. I'm not a believer in DE Kwity Paye in the 1st rd despite the high praise from scouts talking about his raw potential. Their 2nd round pick Odeyingbo tore his ACL before the senior bowl too.
Best Pick: DE Dayo Odeyingbo Vanderbilt
Player to Watch: DE Kwity Paye Michigan
Tennessee Titans: C+
I didn't particularly care for the Titans picks. They released 3 corners this offseason so that was a glaring need. They got Caleb Farley in the 1st rd, but that's a big risk with his injury history and they didn't fill the wide receiver position.
Best Pick: CB Caleb Farley Virgina Tech
Player to Watch: DE Rashad Weaver Pittsburgh
Houston Texans C-
Let's face it. Houston we have a problem!!! They had 5 picks and the first one didn't even come until the 3rd round. And it was a quarterback!!! With the uncertainty surround Deshaun Watson, I guess it makes sense.
Best Pick: QB Davis Mills Stanford
Player to Watch: TE Brevin Jordan Miami
Jacksonville Jaguars: B+
The #1 overall pick of course was Trevor Lawrence and they also got his running mate Travis Etienne to help rebuild this offense and team. Lawrence is the highest rated prospect since Andrew Luck. They took some risk on the defensive side. But I love the underrated safety Andre Cisco in the 3rd round. He is a ball hawk and will control the field for the Jaguars.
Best Pick: QB Trevor Lawrence Clemson
Player to Watch: S Andre Cisco Syracuse
AFC West
Los Angeles Chargers: A
Lets start with my highest grade in the entire draft. The Chargers nailed it!! To get possibly the best offensive line at number 13 in Rashawn Slater is the ultimate win. Then in the 2nd rd they get one of the top corners in Asante Samuel Jr. The draft played out perfectly for them. I'm literally going to list multiple players here for you to watch.
Top Pick: Rashawn Slater OT Northwestern
Players to Watch: CB Asante Samuel Jr. Florida State,
OLB Chris Rumph Duke, RB Larry Roundtree III Missouri, TE Tre' McKitty Georgia
Denver Broncos: A -
The Broncos had one of the best drafts in my opinion too. Before the draft they added Teddy Bridgewater in a trade to compete with Drew Lock. Justin Fields and Mac Jones were still available at their 1st rd selection, but I agree with the decision to go with top CB Patrick Surtain II. And in the 2nd rd they trade up and snag a star in running back Javonte Williams. But lets not forget phenom mountain workout warrior guard Quinn Meinerz. They solidified their most important needs.
Top Pick: RB Javonte Williams North Carolina
Player to Watch: Patrick Surtain II
Kansas City Chiefs: C+
They addressed most of their offensive line issues before draft. Making a trade with the Ravens for offensive tackle Orlando Brown. That left them with only 6 picks. I don't know if Nick Bolton is the answer at linebacker. They didn't really add anything on defense. Whether it be a pass rusher or help in the secondary.
Best Pick: C Creed Humphrey Oklahoma
Player to Watch: ILB Nick Bolton
Las Vegas Raiders D-
I really don't know what is up with Mayock and Jon Gruden. They just seem to throat a dart on the board and see where it lands. They reached again in the 1st rd for an Alabama player Alex Leatherwood that could of been there in the 3rd rd. I'm beginning to wonder how many Alabama and Clemson players they have now. They get my lowest grade of the draft.
Best Pick: S Trevon Moehrig TCU
Player to Watch: OLB Malcom Koonce Buffalo
